Is Your Business Invisible to AI Search? Find Out in 15 Minutes

Here is a question most business owners have never thought to ask: what does ChatGPT say when someone asks it to recommend a business like yours?

Not what does your website say. Not what does Google show. What does ChatGPT say. What does Perplexity say. What does Gemini say when a potential client opens one of these tools and asks for a recommendation in your category.

Most business owners have no idea. And the reason that matters is not theoretical.

ChatGPT serves 800 million users weekly. AI-referred visitors convert at 14.2% compared to Google's 2.8%. The buyers finding businesses through AI tools are high-intent researchers who have already had their questions answered by the AI and arrived at a website ready to evaluate a specific recommendation.

If your business is that recommendation, you are in a very strong position with a very motivated buyer. If it is not, you are invisible to a category of buyer that is growing faster than any other channel in digital marketing right now.

This guide gives you a fifteen-minute self-audit you can run right now, for free, with no technical knowledge required.

Why This Check Matters Before Anything Else

What is an AI visibility audit for a business?

An AI visibility audit measures whether your business appears in AI-generated responses when potential clients ask questions about your category. It is different from checking your Google rankings because AI tools recommend different businesses than Google ranks.

SOCi found ChatGPT recommends just 1.2% of business locations compared to 35.9% in Google's local results. Strong Google performance does not predict AI visibility and each requires separate tracking.

Most businesses have not even started tracking their AI mentions, let alone optimizing for them. This creates a genuine first-mover advantage for those who act now.

Running this audit takes fifteen minutes. Ignoring it means operating without knowing whether a growing segment of your market can find you or not.

The 15-Minute AI Visibility Self-Audit

How do I check if my business shows up in AI search?

You need three things: a browser, fifteen minutes, and accounts on ChatGPT and Perplexity. Gemini is accessible without an account at gemini.google.com.

Step 1: Build your five test queries. (2 minutes)
Write down five questions your ideal clients might actually ask an AI tool when looking for a business like yours. Be specific about who you serve and what you do.

Step 2: Run all five queries in ChatGPT. (4 minutes)
Go to chat.openai.com. Type each of your five queries one at a time. For each response, record: does your business appear by name? Does a specific competitor appear instead? Does the AI give a general answer without naming anyone?

Step 3: Run all five queries in Perplexity. (4 minutes)
Go to perplexity.ai. Type the same five queries. Perplexity shows its sources directly beneath each answer. For each response, record: does your business appear by name? What sources is Perplexity drawing from?

Step 4: Run all five queries in Google. (3 minutes)
Type each query and look at the AI Overview section at the very top of the results page. Record the same information.

Step 5: Score your results. (2 minutes)
Cited (2 points):
Your business is named with a link to your website.
Mentioned (1 point): Your business is named but without a link.
Displaced (0 points, flag immediately): A specific competitor is recommended in your place.
Invisible (0 points): Your business does not appear at all.

Add up your points across all five queries on all three platforms. Maximum score is 30 points.

What Your Score Means

What does my AI visibility score tell me about my business?

25 to 30 points: Your AI visibility is strong. The work shifts to maintaining this position and expanding into new query categories.

15 to 24 points: You have partial AI visibility. Some queries are producing recommendations, others are not.

5 to 14 points: Your AI visibility is weak. Foundational issues exist in either your content structure, schema markup, or external authority signals.

0 to 4 points: Your business is effectively invisible to AI search. This is fixable but requires systematic work across all four layers of AI visibility.

The Three Most Common Results

What should I do when I find out my business is invisible to AI search?

Result 1: You are completely invisible across all platforms.
This almost always indicates AI crawlers are blocked from reading your website or your content is too thin and too generic for AI tools to extract any useful answer. Check yourwebsite.com/robots.txt for Disallow rules under GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot. Then address the content layer.

Result 2: A specific competitor appears consistently in your place.
Visit that competitor's website. Look at what they have that you do not: more specific FAQ content, better schema implementation, stronger external verification, or more consistent NAP signals. That gap is your roadmap.

Result 3: You appear in some queries but not others.
This means your topical coverage is uneven. Identify which query types are producing citations and which are not, then publish specific content addressing the topics where you are invisible.

What Comes After the Audit

What is the next step after running an AI visibility check?

At The PixelSeed Studio, the free AI Visibility Audit we offer goes significantly deeper than this self-check. We review your robots.txt configuration, your schema implementation, your content structure, your NAP consistency, your Google Business Profile completeness, and your external authority signals. We then produce a plain-English report within 48 hours that tells you specifically where your business stands across all four layers of AI visibility and what the priority fixes are.

The self-check tells you what. The professional audit tells you exactly why and exactly what to do about it first.
